At Tygart Mountain Sports, we have the world-class machinery and experienced staff to tune your ski equipment precisely and efficiently. We use the Crystal Rock Robotic Tuning Machine from Montana Sport International to give you consistent, intricately precise tuning at the right level to preserve your skis longer.
Here’s an in-depth guide to our ski tuning services, with prices based on the 2024-25 ski season:
Basic Tune: $45
The Basic Tune service includes edge sharpening and basic wax. It’s a good option for anyone interested in a convenient, economical tune if your equipment has no need for any base repair.
Performance Tune: $65
For $20 more than the Basic Tune, you get an upgraded tune that repairs minor to moderate base damage. This tune includes base repair, stone grind and restructure, edge bevel and angle set, and infrared wax.
Your skis will take a trip through the Montana Sport International tuning machine, where they’ll get a base grind to bring the base back to flat and add a structure to the base. We then add laser-precise base and edge angles using Montana’s GRIP TECH edging system.
Finally, we’ll use an infrared waxing system to add wax to the base and essentially bake it into the ski. This wax application is approximately 70-80% more effective than our basic wax application and 40-50% more effective than iron-on waxing.
Factory Finish Tune: $95
Factory finish tunes bring most skis to better-than-new condition. If your ski has moderate to extensive damage, we might not be able to get it back to new condition, but this tune will get it as close as possible.
This tune includes everything from the Performance Tune and more. You get extensive base repair and base grinding, plus your choice of edge angles and base structures. You can choose a temperature or discipline-specific base structure.
Race Set Up: $155
If you’re racing, you need your skis tuned for your specific needs and in perfect shape. Race Set Up tunes cover everything: base repair, stone grind, discipline-specific structure, sidewall prep, edge bevel and angle set, tip and tail prep, and temperature-specific infrared wax.
Race Season Tune Package: $325 (or $269 when added onto another package)

With this season package, a single individual or racer gets unlimited tunes for their race equipment. We offer same-day service upon request, with some exclusions. Please note that this package is not transferrable.
Family Season Tune Packages: $349-$599
Family packages are transferable within your immediate family, not including adult children or siblings, parents of adults, or house guests. We offer several family packages:
Small — 20 tunes and 3 ski demos for $349
Medium — 30 tunes and 3 ski demos for $449
Large — 40 tunes and 3 ski demos for $549
X-Large — 50 tunes and 3 ski demos for $599
These tune packages work as a maintenance program, meaning you’ll get the tune your equipment needs up to the Performance Tune level. If the ski only needs to be edged and waxed, that’s what we’ll do, but if it needs a full Performance Tune, then we’ll do that instead.
All of our season tune package equipment receives edging from our Montana International robotic tuning machine. We also do infrared wax applications.
Each season tune package comes with 3 free demos that allow you to try out current-model-year skis. Outside of a package like this, a demo costs $55/day, so you are receiving an additional $165 value outside of your tunes. Altogether, a small tune package gives you a $1465 value for just $349.
Share-It Season Tune Package: $999
The share-it package is designed for AirBnB or vacation homeowners who want to give their guests access to ski tuning. You get 40 tunes and 6 ski demos, which you can allocate however you’d like.
Like with the family packages, this package is a maintenance program that gives you and your guests whatever level of tune the equipment needs up to the Performance Tune level. Your equipment will get edging from our Montana International robotic tuning machine and infrared wax application.
The demos in your share-it package allow you or your guests to try out current-model-year skis for no additional cost. You can try out any current ski model we carry in our store.
FAQs About Ski Tuning Services
Q: Are ski tuning services worth it?
Yes, ski tuning keeps your skis in good shape. It addresses dull edges, worn bases, and other wear and tear to keep your skis working longer and improve your ski experience.
As with ski boot fitting, the process is more complicated than you might expect. Basic Tunes that you do throughout the season are simpler than full Performance or Race Set Up Tunes. You will likely need Performance Tunes occasionally and Basic Tunes in between.
Q: How often should you get skis tuned?
The amount of ski tuning you need depends on how often you ski. Ideally, you should have your equipment tuned after every 2-3 days out. The condition of your skis and the level of performance you’re looking for dictate the tuning level you need.
If you notice dull edges, base damage, uneven wear, poor grip, or simply feel like you’re not performing as well as usual, you need a Performance Tune or higher. If you don’t have any base damage, a Basic Tune is an economical option.
Q: Why do you use the Montana Crystal Rock machine for tuning?
This machine allows us to do highly accurate, expert tuning efficiently and give you your skis back faster. It’s a world-class tool of the craft. You can read more about our ski tuning processes and the experiences that led to them in a previous blog post.
Q: Can you tune your skis at home?
If you take the time to learn the process, you might be able to do minor edge work at home, although it won’t be as precise as what you’d get with professional equipment. For medium to extensive base repairs, sharpening, recut edges, or structure grounds, it’s always better to let professionals with a good machine do the job.
Q: Should you wax or edge first?
Always edge first, then wax. You want a clean, smooth, and ready-to-go surface for applying wax.
